Yes, it is to make themselves look like they care.
The environment is popular now so they want to appear like they are "with it". Also, as many people say, no publicity is bad publicity. Any excuse to get their faces out there.

It's because our reactionary federal government has an undeclared war on all the things that will benefit the ordinary people -- versus writing open-ended checks for the oil industry.
Somebody's got to stand up and say "ENUF!"
The celebs have a stage and they've decided to use it.

Why wouldn't they care about the enviroment, or other humane causes? Just because you are famous and make a ton of cash doesn't mean you stop caring about people or the world we all share. Sometimes people tend to pay more attention to a cause if there are famous names associated with it. A number of famous people use their celebrity to raise money for their causes....like Elizabeth Taylor does for Aids.

'Would say some of them are really serious about their charities. I doubt that there's a percentage that does it, to be visualized as somebody larger than life. I applaud Paul Newman.

probably some of them do it for publicity, but really we should all care about the environment. global warming isn't just something al gore made up just to be in the spotlight.

Purely for publicity. Most of them are too stupid to understand anything that isn't written for them. They are mostly overly paid spoiled rich people who feel guilty about their gluttony so they try to make working people like us feel bad about ourselves. It isn't working, by the way.
