You need:

-current, not expired passport
-visitor's visa from Russian embassy/consulat (the cost was mentioned above)
-plane ticket. Price will vary depending on the season. If you want to buy one right now, Aeroflot (Russian main airline) will be the cheapest option
-a hotel reservation
-preferably, you need to have a Russian contact in Moscow to show you around or assist with communication, if necessary.

Frankly, the easiest way would be to purchase a "vacation package" from one of the U.S. touring companies, like Friendlyplanet (Friendlyplanet.com). They take care of everything, tickets, hotels, guide (someone even meets you at the airport). I think the only thing you'd need to do yourself is a visa.

Hope that helps!

Just do not exhibit up dressed in simplest shirts and t-blouse, plenty of foreigners do this, however do not be dressed in wintry weather material both (except you're going for the duration of the wintry weather) Dacha probably very small or very large, all of it depends upon how wealthy is the household of your buddy. In a way, Moscow is like Hong Kong, so do not convey plenty of bank cards with you and police (if referred to as) does no longer on the whole exhibit up for forty mins. In all different respects Moscow is like New York (besides that men and women talk Russian). St.Petrsbourg is the equal, however bigger due to the fact that there are a LOT of museums and different cultural and no longer-so-cultural points of interest. People from everywhere Europe come to talk over with it, so there are tons of travelers going for walks round.

You should book your flights and your hotel first, as you will need to put the exact dates of entry and return on the visa application. To apply for the visa you will need an invitation from the hotel you booked (which is a standard service most hotels provide) or you can apply for a visa through an agency who provide the invitation for you. If you decide to go with an agency it will cost you more but it takes away the hassle of dealing directly with the Russian embassy and getting the invitation from the hotel. Well, first of all you need your Passport to leave the country. And perhaps a green card (not sure). You can get this at an immigration office or something like that. Ask around people who live in your area if they know where you can find this.
