ok, im wondering if i buy a core 2 duo pc that runs at 2.33 ghz, will it be faster than the lower priced 3.45ghz pentium d
I know that Core 2 does not rely solely on clock speed, but is there any way to find out what pentium d clock speed a 2.4 ghz core 2 duo will be equivalent to?

Any help is appreciated

Like AMD processors, the Core 2 duo performs better at a given clockspeed than a Pentium-D, and executes more instructions per tick. Of course with AMD chips you get the numeric rating (4200+, 3800+) to indicate what Ghz Pentium it's performance is equivalent to.

Since the architecture is more efficient, the clockspeed really isn't the baseline for performance any more. But for Core 2 duos, it's over 2x. Even the 1.87Ghz Core 2 Duo E6300 outperforms a 3.8ghz Pentium-D or 3800+ AMD X2.

I havn't conducted any studies, or read any studies on what a good factor is. But off the top of my head, I'd say multiply by 1.9 or 2 on the C2D to get the PDs.
