Cultural change is a complex phenomenon. The hippies and other groups that received so much publicity during the sixties were never more than a small minority of the population. relatively few people ever lived on a commune, dropped acid, or burned their bras or draft cards. Even the changes that were apparently greatest had their roots in earlier events. The hippies were the heirs to the beatniks. Rock and roll began in the fifties, and had roots much earlier. The surest test is to look at the world today. The sixties seem more like a short term side trip than a permanent change of driection.

The civil rights movement was a continuation, but the counter culture was a reaction to the values of 50's by the baby boom generation. The feminist movement was picking up the traditions of struggle for equal rights for women that had been subdued by the depression and WWII. The counter culture was a movement of the young so as the baby boomers aged it faded but the efforts towards equality for Blacks and Women had lasting effects.
