When ever I plug my home computers Ethernet cable to my laptop it says its connected on my laptop. So I turned my cable modem off and then on my laptop it still says its connected but the cable modem is turned off. What would be the problem of this?

The cable is still connected. Turning off the modem does not negate that.

Some laptops behave this way when a cable is connected and shows levels on the other end (off or on). Does the adapter work correctly? Does it show disconnected when the cable is unplugged? If those items are ok, its just the way the buffers work and isn't really an issue.

If the port does not work at all it may have been damaged by being connected to say a phone line etc. But generally even that doesn't bother too many adapters.

well ok when u unplugged the modem do not connect the ethernet cable yet, until the laptop has restarted then connect the ethernet cable first and then the modem, and you will see that this works,
