People are smoking crack that answered this thread.. let me fix it for you.

I'm an online role playing game junkie!

Still recovering from WOW, lol.

But i've been through just about all of them.. to include some people above me pasted from websites instead of typing something (cough cough!)

To one degree or another I would find something that put me out about it.. TOP down look (cheesy), 2-d graphics, immature people playing it (runescape!), glitches all over the place, poor support, stuff like that. (kinda like most of the games people have mentioned in this thread....)

Then I found one and have been with it for awhile now:

www.rubiesofeventide.com

Granted, it does require a download. But it's a one-time deal. THey don't do huge updates all the time like some of the games.

Rubies has actual 3-d graphics.. great sound track, lots and lots of area to explore in a group or by yourself. It has crafting and spells and everything you could want from a good RPG.

It's got like 140 character classes, 6 races, etc.

It's just an all-around fun game for whatever you set out to accomplish for whatever time-frame you want to play (no 8 hour raids or 4 hour dungeons where you can't leave, that type of thing).

ANd if you like soloing there are just as many opportunities to do that as there are parties (no penalty for being in a party so it's just as much fun only faster).

Look me up on the phoenix server.. I'm scallawag, Rapscallion, twitchn and I might have some gear for ya!

The best is Ultima Online. :) But let me give you options about Free MMORPGs. First I'm going to tell you about the browser based MMORPGs, then I'll mention somewhere you can see the downloadable.
To play games in flash, there are Dragon Fable and Adventure Quest (In both you have to pay to have full access to the game, and notice that Dragon Fable is still under construction and that it's hard for non-members to login into AQ). There are also those community based flash games (that some people consider to be MMORPGs) that are becoming really popular: Gaia Online (that I already played and that is really cool), ClubPenguin, PuzzlePirates, and i think that Habbo goes the same way; in all of this games you create an avatar and play games like fishing to get money and personalize those avatars.
There’s also the pure browser based ones: Tibia is a fairly popular game, BiteFight and Knightfight are OK. Travian is a strategy MMOG, also pretty good. There’s also pokemon crater (but it has a lots of publicity) and, my personal favorite, FallenSword (it’s much like pokemoncrater, only that it doesn’t have lots of publicity, and has a guild system that stimulate interaction, not to mention the lottery and the auction system).
The downloadable... well, i think it's harder to speak about them. I'll also give you a link for the "List of free MMORPGs" on wikipedia, where you can see the downloadable games out there (in this list you can read about other browser based MMORPGs as well). Take a look at the websites and check the screenshots, maybe you'll find some that interest you. My favorites are MapleStory, Anarchy Online, Monsters and Me, Flyff and Silk Road. Seems like Rappelz is also pretty good.
There are also some really good free downloadable MMORPGs coming out: Sword of the new world (where you can control up to three characters at once - but you'll have to pay so that you can get over a certain level) and the global version of Lunia (it's still on closed beta, but will soon come out - keep an eye on it).
See you.

I'd say Guild Wars. Runescape of course SUCKS and Maplestory is well....crap (Unless of course you like spawn camping for ten hours just to level up once and to attacked by hackers). World of Warcraft is basically awesome wit tons of quests and a huge world, the only downside is the monthly fee which will leave you living off of food stamps. Guild Wars on the other hand looks absolutely amazing and makes WoW look like a five year old made it. It also has a great Player versus Player community and with the new sequel coming out, it'll just pwn everything else. (Tons of quests, exploration, bosses, etc)

World of WarCraft, or Maplestory, Guild Wars (never played but planning to)

OR eve online, which is very, difficult if you don't got patience to go through an extremley long tutorial but once you know how to play IT IS AMAZING, and it is pay to play.... just to let you know.
