If you mean an aluminium tank, it depends on what kind of tank you're talking about and what has been stored in it. Unfortunately, aluminium is a metal that is attacked by both bases and acids, as well as some salt solutions. so there are numerous possible causes. It could also be a mechanical problem; a crack or pin-hole somewhere.

By alum, are you referring to aluminium? Because mercury and gallium can both cause serious corrosion of aluminium, as well as acids.

Alum, on the other hand, is an industrial crystal. I have no idea what would cause a tank of that to leak.
