they actually came up with that name a long time ago ,when cars didn't have heaters in them,the driver had to wear gloves,and this is how the name actually originated,through the years it sort of stuck with all cars even now its still called that ,but used to that was the main purpose of it was to store gloves for the driver and the passengers,this started back in the early days before 1908,a long time ago,good luck hope this helps.

It was for the chauffers gloves, when he drove?? Or the early cars had to be hand cranked to start. Also, there were more repairs on the early cars, so a set of gloves would be a good idea. Also, the roads weren't the best back then either, you may have needed gloves to push the car out of the mud.
Those are my guesses. good luck.

PS. I have actually had a pair of gloves in the glove box, on occasion.

Originally in late 1800's, early 1900's when cars were still open compartment type you would dress up in riding clothes pants jacket,gloves hat and goggles. so when it was warm or you got out you would leave your gloves in the glove compartment and the resturant or hotel or wherever you went would have a coat and hat check room. you would leave goggles and gloves in car because they were concidered dirty(work items). Hand cranking checking steam level and all

Im interior the united kingdom....yet im confussed with ur question lol. the subject on the passenger facet of the vehicle i could call the glove field...the bonnet of the vehicle could be what covers the engine and the boot could needless to say be on the returned of the vehicle lol. the way you have been asserting it sounded as tho you refear to the bonnet and the glove field as being the single concern lol...
