I totally agree with you.he just repeats himself in every movie.and that's so boring.and these quasi-intellectual conversations that actually mean nothing are so annoying.

Compare his body of work to that of other postwar producer-director-actors. Every last one of them had some successes and some stinkers. Shall we visit the horrorshop of cinematic genius gone stinko? Cries and Whispers. Eyes Wide Shut. I'm sorry, I'll stop now, getting a little queasy just recalling them.
Allen is great when he has good people to act with and when inspiration strikes him, as it did in the good old Diane Keaton days or as it re-emerged with Mira Sorvino. In that, he's also like all the rest of the famous or notorious.
And Woody Allen is a fine Dixieland clarinet player, that's one thing you can't take away from him.
Overall, like most artists (in all of the art forms), his most inspired and original work came in his earlier years, and the rest of his career has been either recapitulation or unsteady attempts at reaching for new ideas. There are exceptions, but we can't all be Spielberg.

I liked Annie Hall, but I think everything else I've seen of his was way overrated. I couldn't even watch Husbands and Wives without getting motion sickness! The funniest thing I've seen involving Woody Allen is when someone immitates him, like a Saturday Night Live skit or something :-)

I've seen Annie Hall, Hannah and her Sisters, Manhattan, and Bullets over Broadway.
I hated Manhattan and Bullets over Broadway. Thought Hannah and her Sisters was all right...I did really like Annie Hall though. I want to see his earlier stuff.
I agree that he gets really pretentious and a lot of the time it seems like he's trying too hard to get a point across or get a certain "intellectual" comment in. I also think that his characters become monotonous. I do like the style of his films though.

I have never seen a Woody Allen movie, that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I couldn't name one, off hand, but I absolutely, love his work. He is the best at making movies, with that New York, feel. He is an absolute, genius.

He's very strange. When he auditions actors, he hides behind a wall or somewhere, he can't be seen.
