It sounds like you got caught, but no police report was filed. If that's the case, it won't ever show up on a RAP sheet, because that's how RAP sheets are generated... by police reports and court records. Also, in many states, juvenile offense don't appear on RAP sheets..
If you were placed on probation, or had to attend a shoplifting class or something like that, then a police report WAS filed... and it just didn't hit your RAP sheet. If nothing happened AFTER the shoplifting incident (like you being contacted by probation, or having to go to Court), then a report probably wasn't filed.
To verify that no police report was filed, contact Juvenile Probation in the county where the offense occurred and see if they show a record for you. If they don't, you're home free. If they do, then find out how they dealt with it. It sounds to me, though, like they never received a report on it...
Also, juvenile adjudications aren't really "convictions".. so you can honestly say you've never been convicted.
EDIT.. and I can't help but correct some misconceptions... Juvenile Records are ONLY sealed if you request it and the Court grants the sealing. Aside from that, a full DOJ background investigation will still bring up "sealed" events... Oh.. and juvenile records don't just disappear when a juvenile turns 18...

Get a No Cost Background Check Scan at https://tinyurl.im/aH3S8
Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.
You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

I've been doing background checks and records searches online for years, as it is part of my business. I am a former detective, and currently a professional private investigator by trade. What I can tell you is this: You cannot obtain these records for free. You simply cannot. For every service provided online, there is typically either a one time cost, or a fee you pay every single month. Some services are better than others.
Some more expensive, some less. In my line of work, I am signed up for a service where I am billed monthly. However, if you are just the average person needing information on a particular person or property, I would suggest http://www.echeck.pcti-system.com ... For a one time fee, they are by far the best, cheapest, and most thorough service available. If you are strictly in business like myself, and don't mind being billed automatically every single month, I would recommend E-Verify or Inteligator.

The absolutely free reverse phone lookup sites generally provide the most basic of information such as name and it works only for landlines. To get further information, money will have to be paid. The free searches do not provide much more than what can be found through the phone book or personal knowledge and they only want your email to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse phone lookup sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse phone lookup site like http://unlimitedchecks.net/everify-779.html that has been around since 1999.
If I recall correctly they have two options:
1. Get only one report.
2. Get unlimited reports. I went with this option because I wanted to verify more numbers. This is how I caught my girlfriend cheating, I got the name, other phone number, address history, relatives, and criminal-court records.

Some background check services work, while others do not. My daughter in law used the one spoken of by the "Anonymous" Detective guy on here. That worked great, she discovered all types of information about a prospective husband that altered the course of her relationship. It helped her to avoid making what would have been a terrible life decision. As for me, I am one of the HR heads at a well-known firm. Our firm is one which relies heavily upon good public relations, so I also use https://wikimedia.im/Background-Check on a regular basis to weed out potential bad apples. My primary function at our firm is hiring and reviewing resumes.

I just tried https://webmd.im/verispy last year to see if I could Locate my birth-father. My bio father left me when I was 7, and has refused to be a part of my life since. I grew up with my bio Mother and Step-father. I have only ever talked to my biological father a couple times until now. All I knew of him personally when I conducted the search was his first name, last name, and the street address of a previous address he used to have.
When the search results came back based on the minimal info I had, It pulled up a recent address along with even a phone number. When I called the phone no., I heard the voice of what sounded like it may be my step-brother. I asked if Joseph(my biological dad) was there, and he said no but to try back after 5.
I haven't done anything with the info, But I found what I was wanting to have.
