I only drove it down the road when it happened but it was raining out so I am unsure if that had something to do with it. The Jeep is only 2 years old and had its 30,000 mile check up last month. I am concerned that something serious happened to it. Any advice would be well appreciated.

One of two possibilities exists.
1. The alternator has a short in it and has stopped doing its job and you are drawing off the battery to keep the engine running. On occasion the alternator will die an agonizing death and create a direct short and will become extremely hot to the touch even with the motor. The battery light will stay on even with the motor off if this happens.
2. You have a direct short elsewhere in the wiring system. Most likely a wire that is touching a hot exhaust manifold and the insulation has burned away and the copper wire touches a metal part or piece of the motor. Similarly, a wire that is just rubbing against something that wears through the insulation the same thing will occur.

I'd take it to a respectable shop that handles only electrical repairs since it could be an easy fix or a more difficult fix. The more difficult fix is identifying which wire is the culprit and then fixing it.

If someone left something laying on your engine during your last check up, like the oil dipstick, this could create a problem if it touches the battery post and part of the motor or any other metal under the hood. This would be fixed by putting things back where they belong.

If you had electric brakes I would tell you another story but since you don't then I won't.

Good Luck!

my husband is a mechanic and he said sounds like a bad alternator yes it can be fixed get a new alternator but with it only being 2 years old and 30,000 miles it should still be under warranty
