I'm supposed to do an interview of people that were involved in the Vietnam war, it doesnt matter if you just saw it happen in the news, know someone that was in it, or if you were actually fighting in it, just as long as you somehow experienced it. I have a couple of questions for you to fill out so please elaborate on your answers and thank you so much for doing so.

1. Why did the United States fight a war in Vietnam?
2. How did you feel about the war at that time?
3. In what ways did the Vietnam war affect America?
4. In what ways did the Vietnam war affect the world?
5. Do you think America should be praised or condemned for its involvement in the Vietnam war? why?
6. How were you affected by the Vietnam war?
7. How were you involved in it?
8. How old were you at that time, and what were you doing during the war?
9. Please include your name and age for refrences.

Thanks again for taking your time to answer the questions. It is very much appreciated.

1. Why did the United States fight a war in Vietnam?
The United States interest in Vietnam was to keep communism from spreading throughout Southeast Asia and the South Pacific by supporting the democratic government of South Vietnam.

2. How did you feel about the war at that time?
I was a kid at the time, so I had no strong feelings except that my Uncle Cho was killed in action. He was my favorite uncle, and I cried for weeks after I received word of his death from my Mother.

3. In what ways did the Vietnam war affect America?
The U.S. lost a lot of credibility to the rest of the world. America was divided with their opinions and interests for the War.

4. In what ways did the Vietnam war affect the world?
Regionally, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries were able to develop their own democratic governments and capitalist economies to sustain themselves against communism. They formed ASEAN, which is an alliance of countries that would defend each other against communism. Australia, South Korea, New Zealand and other countries were a part of a coalition with the United States to support South Vietnam.

Globally, the Vietnam War was a part of the Cold War. In the beginning, the Cold War was the United States against the Soviet Union and China. The relationship between the Soviet Union and China broke apart during the Vietnam War, which opened the door for the United States to ally with China (ergo – Nixon’s visit to China). Few realize that the relationship between China and the United States was instrumental in ending the Vietnam War. The shift of global power made further U.S. support for South Vietnam unnecessary, which validated the Vietnamization of the war.

5. Do you think America should be praised or condemned for its involvement in the Vietnam war? why?
I think questions like this should no longer be asked. The Vietnam War ended over 30 years ago, and only those who had fought in that war have earned the right to determine who should be praised or condemned.

6. How were you affected by the Vietnam war?
My Dad is a Vietnam Veteran who has suffered and still suffers numerous illnesses from his tour in Vietnam. My Uncle Cho died in combat. Three other uncles were imprisoned in re-education camps for years after the War ended. One uncle had all of his arms and legs broken, had his eye ripped out of he skull and lived to tell about it. Dozens of others in my family fled Vietnam and lived incredible horror stories in their journey to America. Other family continued to live in Vietnam and survived through communist oppression. Several uncles fought in the NVA (North Vietnamese Army), with one almost killed twice by another uncle who was in ARVN (South Vietnamese Army).

7. How were you involved in it?
Being an infant and a kid at the time, I was not directly involved in the Vietnam War. However, most of my family was. My Dad served in Vietnam from 1964-1965. One of my uncles was killed in action while fighting the Viet Cong. Others were imprisoned in re-education camps for years and beaten to near death. Other family escaped Vietnam during the fall of Saigon and others fled as boat people.

8. How old were you at that time, and what were you doing during the war?
I was born near the beginning of the Vietnam War and was eight years old at the end. I was growing up and going to school here in America.

9. Please include your name and age for refrences.

I think while you have every right to ask for volunteers to come forward to give you information about their feelings, asking people to post their names and ages on a public forum is not the best way to pursue research.

I don't think anyone should ever be condemned when their original purpose is to assist friends in need. The United
States of America is made up by a majority of compassionate people who believe strongly in Democracy. When one of our allies, the French Government, needed support in training colonial troops, we gave them the assistance they needed.

My brother served during the Vietnam era. My best friend's cousin was a POW. Neither of them was treated with high regard upon returning home.

My father served in WWII and was considered a battlefield hero. Until the day he died, he would have told you he was just a kid from Dorchester, MA, who did what he had to do to survive and ensure those around him survived.

My perspective is that it is difficult physically and mentally to fully comprehend the magnitude of any conflict that results in the use of guns and bombs.

To those who would criticize lightly: Learn your history before you are condemned to repeat it.
