Most jobs aren't high on the money list, it's a career choice you make for the love of the animals. I'm a small animal rescuer and do so on a voluntary basis, which means I pay for everything out of my pocket. I do have set adoption fees, but they come nowhere near what my overhead is. If I adopt 1 in a month I've done good for that month and with $5 being the average fee, I will never break even. I do this because I love the animals and want to see them all in great homes or they stay with me as they're caregiver/owner. I have 53 small animals and 27 other animals, they are from 17 different species and I love them all. Even the most expensive vets don't make much after their overhead (bills) are paid for. To be a vet it takes more schooling then to become a regular human doctor (4-8 yrs) as many as 12 years for a specialist.
Here are 10 jobs -- beyond veterinarians -- that let you work with animals:
Animal Caretaker
What they do: Assist in grooming, training and companionship for animals staying in pet spas, kennels and similar temporary locations.
What they earn: A median salary of $30,000 when working for a company.
Marine Biologist
What they do: Study and interact closely with the lives of species that spend all or most of their lives in water.
What they earn: $45,000 is the median salary.
Park Manager
What they do: Oversee daily park maintenance and operations. They are in charge of preserving and protecting wilderness areas.
What they earn: $40,000 is the median salary for state and local government positions.
High School Science Teacher
What they do: Educate students on the methods of observation, experimentation and study of different topics in science, including animal life.
What they earn: A median salary between $41,400 and $45,920.
Animal Groomer
What they do: Maintain the appearance and hygiene of animals.
What they earn: A median salary of $30,000 when working for a company.
Veterinary Pathologist
What they do: Study the scientific causes, development and results of diseases in animals.
What they earn: A median salary between $120,000 and $160,000 for industry work.
Animal Welfare Lawyer
What they do: Practice law with special focus on how it deals with animals. Cases can range from veterinary malpractice to anti-cruelty issues.
What they earn: The median annual earnings of all lawyers are $94,930.
Zoo Director
What they do: Organize and direct zoo operations. This position includes everything from analyzing the annual budget to organizing the special care of animals.
What they earn: The average starting salary for zoologists is $28,000, increasing to $36,000 after five years.
Animal-Assisted Therapist
What they do: Study behavioral patterns in animals and apply techniques to improve mental, social and physical issues within humans through animal/human companionship.
What they earn: Median annual earnings of physical therapists are $60,180, but the concentration of animal-assistance may increase or decrease earnings. Some animal-assisted therapy is considered volunteer work.
Animal Behavioral Trainer
What they do: Teach animals how to act in response to different conditions or stimuli. Training is conducted for entertainment, protection, detection or companionship.
What they earn: $36,000 is the median salary with one to four years of experience.*
Here's where I got that info from.

Unfortunately, there is no job that pays you good money to play with puppies and kittens all day. Believe me, I've looked! I also really like animals, and for a while I thought I wanted to be a vet. Then I decided I could never put all the animals to sleep. Then I thought I could be a vet for a zoo or something, since those animals would be mostly healthy. However, being a zoo vet is a very tough job to get; a good analogy would be being a hairdresser for celebrities. If you think you can do without so much money, animal rescue can be a very rewarding job. Zookeeper is ok too, I had an internship as a zookeeper last semester, but you're mostly shoveling poop and cleaning cages - there's not much interaction with the animals. Also, zookeepers (depending on the zoo, of course) don't make that much dough either. Most zookeepers I knew had to have a second job just to pay their bills, but it was a very small zoo that didn't pay well.
I finally decided to be a research librarian at a university, and I just keep a small zoo of pets at home. If you find a well-paid animal job, let me know!

Being a vet isn't all that bad. When you see that putting down an animal is for the best then sometimes it's a relief but I totally understand what you're saying.
Usually shelters don't pay anything and most are volunteer.
I own a pet boarding facility and I had it built onto my house. There is A LOT of money to be made but you have to put a lot into it to start up. The money will be well worth it but owning a business esp. one that has live animals involved means that you will no longer have a life of your own. So far I've had 5 days off in the last 4 years and I haven't seen a beach or vacation either. And the cleaning and maintenance involved can take up to 10 hours a day esp. in the summer months & holidays. If you love animals though it may just be worth it. (Plus it's better than working around people all day lol!)

You could become an animal trainer. Or a pet daycare owner. Or a groomer.
You could become a foster parent for the humane society-they take in sick animals and help care for them until they are well enough to be put up for adoption. The animal shelter pays for the food and meds to look after them. But I think it's a volunteer thing, not a paid job.
You could be a vet tech. That's an animal nurse, not a doctor. You wouldn't be responsible for putting animals down.
You sound like you are still kinda young. Make sure you take all the sciences in high school. There's lots of ways you can work with animals.

I'm not sure how much money you get, but it should be enough to live on. Be a dog groomer and also take pets while the parents are on vacation. Then, you can do also or instead of, you can have a dog walking service. Maybe you could hire teenagers to walk dogs for you and they could work at you service! I hope this helps, i have the same problem but I also want to work with horses, and be able to support my horse during college! Good Luck!

You need to grow up above the 5th grade first, putting an animal down is sometimes the kindest thing you can do for them, medical field is not the field to go into for money, you either have a calling or you don't and if you don't stay outta the field I love, we have enough non caring people in it now

Every job has good and bad parts - yes having to put an animal to sleep is one of the hard parts - but vets. don't just put animals to sleep. They save lives, make animals feel better, and repect their lives.
The few times that I have had to have one of my animals put to sleep I have been so very thankful to the vet. that could release them from their suffering and pain.
For one of my dogs the vet can out to my car and gave her shot there so I did not have to carry her into the office. Friends of mine have had the vet come to their house and have the dog be in their favorite place under a tree
What they could do for those animals was trully a gift.
Any thing you do with animals will bring you into contact with some sadness. Rescue workers deal with dogs and cats that are sick or emotionally hurt and can not be placed in loving homes. Shelter workers see the sadness of animals that don't get adopted. Breeders see loved animals that they have raised age and die. Zoo workers deal with sick animals and those they care for die. Being an animal owner means you deal with the loss of the animal at the end of its time with us.
Death is a part of life and we all have to learn how to balance the sadness of life with the blessings of life, and to give thanks for the good things. We do not trully appreciate the blessings side until we can accept the heartbreak side.
Good luck in finding what you want to do with your life and just remember no matter the sadness that we feel in the loss of the animals in our lives - it can never out weigh the joy that they bring into your lives.

Usually the best wat to make the most money is to own your own business. I would recomment starting your own business. you could include services such as boarding services where you look after people's pets while they are away. You could include grooming services where you wash and pamper the pets. It could include nail trimming and things like that. In Australia there is a mobile pet grooming business which is franchised. You wouldn't want to work in a pound because animals are put down there avery day. And the way they are kept in those little cages is very sad to look at.
