Plus, hes not known by the generic baseball fan. Starters voting is usually a popularity contest, thats why Mike Piazza would always be the starting NL catcher even though he sucked. This year is different, because there are no well known NL catchers, however NYM's Paul lo Duca will be the starter because everyone knows him and he plays in NY. He's not the best by a long shot (Martin is) but he's still going to win.

When you have the fans casting the votes it becomes a popularity contest. I promise you that half the fans that voted don't even know who Russell Martin is. He is a young player playing all-star caliber baseball again this year and his time will come because he will have many more good years.

He is not all that well know. Part of that is west coast bias. I am sure a few of your fellow Dodgers fans voted for LoDuca, who is winning the voting, because you know him, and he is popular with fans of teams he has been on. One other thing to note- a lot of American League fans vote and they don't know who Russell Martin is. Do not take the all-star voting seriously. I am sure Tony LaRussa will put Martin on the team and he'll play four innings on all-star night

Because the average person that only sees the one or two games a year that they go to still get to vote, and they vote solely on name recognition. Martin has moved up since last week, though, so somebody's paying attention. He was in 4th place last Tuesday.

It probably has to do with being on the West. I don't really know that much about him and most on the East Coast don't because he is on the West. Also, is he a great defensive or offensive because defensive minded players tend to get shunned
