Two very thorough, well-illustrated sites on the topic I would reccomend are:
The Theoi Project, http://www.theoi.com
Specializes in Greek gods and goddesses, 100's of them.
Greek Mythology Link, http://www.maicar.com/GML/
All about mythology, various topics and characters are covered.
The Theoi site also has a library of ancient Greek and Roman literature on myth -- the full versions of the stories give you a better "feel" for the characters gods, rather than just brief summaries of the myths.

Go to www.theoi.com/ and click on the libary section and read everything there, or at least the Greek sources. I recommend the lliad first, or the homeric hyms first cause they're shorter and, oh so beautiful! Basically what I'm saying is that actually reading the myths is the best way to learn about greek mythology especially if you're intentions are to write a book, The good news is that this part isn't even work it's fun. :D Then maybe you might want to read some books written by modern author's on the subject if you want to look at some contempoary views on the subject. Like Bahcuss: the biography (if you like dionysus).........writting a book isn't easy you need years of research, if you want to write a good one anyways.

Here's two sites that might help!
http://education.yahoo.com/reference/encyclopedia/entry/Greekrel
http://www.the-pantheon.com/main.htm
Also, when I was little, I read these two books called "Have A Hot Time, Hades" and "Phone Home, Persephone" by Kate McMullan, and they had Gods and Godesses family trees in the back, as well as information on some of the Gods and Godesses. The books themselves are comedic, but the information might help. I reccomend you Google and E-bay Greek Mythology or Gods and Godesses for books, websites, and other helpful stuff.
Good luck with your book!

You want to write a book about mythical Greece & Rome, but don't know anything about their deities??? Um, try reading Mythology by Edith Hamilton0. Use Wikipedia. Try reading Joseph Campbell's stuff. You don't seem to have thought this through... There's so much information out there, why are you coming here to start? Maybe you should give up now. There are scholars who dedicate their entire lives to this topic... good luck, or whatever.

if you really want to know about greek gods you can refer to me (next time I will come to Yahoo answer I will prepare a small description of the gods and if you are really interested I will tell the stories from the scratch) but if you are really interested in the other part of the Greek Culture - The Titans few I know about them because they were banned.

apollo was god of sun and prophecy.
artemis was goddess of the moon and hunting.
the above deities were twins by the way.
hades was god of the underworld. his helmet was given to him by the cyclopes.
dionysis was god of wine.
zeus was king of them all.
hera was zeus' wife.
half of the olympians were sons/daughters of zeus.
olympians were the ones who defeated the titans.
hermes was god of theives.
helios and apollo are the same deity, yet different characters (incarnates... which makes me wonder)
that should give u a beginning. enjoy

my favorite story is persephane and demiter. so Hades the god of the underworld supposedly kidnapped persephane who is the daughter of demiter. So Demiter is the goddess of "spring " and for the 6 months that her daugher was missing that she did not bring forth sunshine and nature - which would be called winter and fall seasons.
google the rest of teh story ....
