It's supposed to have come from South Africa. It was a hit song in in late 50s or early 60s by a USA band called the Tokens. Sometimes it's titled "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" or "Wim O Weh." I don't know what that means; I guess it's supposed to be in some African language, or maybe it's nonsense lyrics.
I think it was recorded by folk singers The Weavers (featuring Pete Seeger) before the Tokens made it a hit.
