It's very unlikely that you would, because the egg is only good for about 12-24 hours after it's released, which occurs about 14 days before your period begins. Of course you should always use protection just in case, but if you are trying to get pregnant, that would not be a good time at all. However, your cycle can be thrown off for some reason, and you may think you're due for a period when that month it's going to be late, so again, use protection just in case.

Gernerally it works like this: you get your period, then it stops, then you ovulate somewhere around the middle of your cycle, if the egg is not fertilised then it dies, then about 14 days later you get your period and the egg and lining of the uterus are flushed out, and it starts all over again. So by the time you are a few days before you period, the egg is already dead and your body is preparing to expel it through your period. There are always exceptions of course, like if for some reason you ovulate a second time later in your cycle, or you have a short luteal phase.
