I had bought a baby sulcata. It was not really active and slept alot. His eyes were always close when he woke up as if he had pink eye or something, but he didnt really want to eat and finally died. Why did this happen?

If they are kept indoors tortoises need a heat lamp for basking,a UVB light to act as natural sunlight and specific temperature and humidity along with a low protien diet. Any of these could have caused/contributed to an early death. It could also have been a vitamin deficiency, an respritory infection or many other things. Sorry about your tort :(

you sulcata might be sick already when you got him. Otherwise, The symptoms that you brought up suggests that either that and/or it was really early for the hatchling to be cared for by man. I had the same case with a indian star tortoise, I got him really early and he just died on me. Turtles have a high mortality rate when they are very young but is very hardy when they become stable with your conditions. Vitamins, staple supply of water and food are also essential for your sulcata to survive.

Thank you Brain. I was going to ask what a sulcata was since it was not listed in Dictionary.com. As a small child I caught and tried to raise several baby river turtles, both soft and hard shelled. Alas, They always died.

how small was it? It may not have been big enough to be kept by man, and no offense, especially with someone who had no clue what they were doing.

When you noticed it wasn't doing well you should've taken it to the vet.

for the 2 before me...a sulcata is a turtle....

He probably was sick when he was born, but if you bought it you could probably get your money back! And for the people who don't know what a sulcata it is a reptile it is like a turtle.

those babies could desire to be saved heat in any respect time and want a basking spot of roughly ninety-ninety 4 ranges. they desire water in any respect cases and nutrition in any respect cases. once you soak them do no longer flow above the palstron, and basically soak them in heat water, whilst the water starts off getting chilly is whilst its time to take them out and placed them returned under their bask spot. He could are becoming to be too chilly and desires warmed returned up, or he could are becoming to be ill. yet whilst its been an entire day now and he's no longer shifting that would not sound stable. they are very energetic as babies and eat plenty. So what your asserting would not sound too stable. in addition they desire extra calcium with a competent phosphorous ratio with extra nutrition d3

The diet may be wrong. They eat very low quality food. They are like cows or grazing animals. Poor quality grass, not good stuff like alfalfa.

But babies should be able to handle a wider range of food. Not too much protein.
