Batting average is derived from by dividing the number of hits a player acquires by the number of at bats. Remember, at bats don't take into consideration plate appearances associated with sacrifice flies or bunts, walks, or hit by pitches.

A batting average is the number of hits divided by the number of times at bat for that player. However, you do not count walks or sacrifices as a time at bat. A sacrifice is when a batter tries to move a team mate along the base paths, knowing he, the batter, will probably be out. For example he may lay down a bunt or intentionally try to hit a fly ball.
These times at the plate, like walks or being hit by a pitch, do not count as, "at bats."

Batting Average = Hits / At-bats

which differs from...

On base Percentage = Hits + Walks / Plate Appearances.

(Walks count as a plate appearance but not an at-bat)

number of hits divided by number of official at bats...
if a guy gets 3 hits in 10 at bats then he's hitting .300

remember you cannot use plate appearances in this equation- must be official at bats.
