Ummm. People have the right idea, but are a bit mixed up about their dates. In Lincoln's time the President was still inaugurated on March 4 (a date set by Congress in 1788). Indeed, this was the case up until FDR's second term when the 20th amendment (ratified in 1933) shifted the date to the current one of January 20.

Lincoln was assassinated on April 14 (Good Friday), only six weeks (42 days) into his second term. He still had 3 yr 11 1/2 months to go. (Since there are 1441 days in a four-year term [365 x 4 + leap day], that would be 1399 days.)

For the text of the 20th amendment, and some explanation of its background, see:

Second time elected was in 1864. He was assassinated on April 14, 1865. The next election was in 1868, but of course Andrew Johnson served out the rest of Lincoln's term.
