Stay away from poetry.com and poetryamerica.com, you will SPEND money and waste your time and reputation and poems there.

You can buy Poet's Market if you like. It's good for double-checking before you send your submission. It's better for the front sections where they give you tips on what to do and cover letters and the such.

Somebody else here posted this site and I've been using it for a couple of weeks: http://www.duotrope.com
You can search and order your results according to payment. Lots of magazines, including a few bigger magazines I couldn't find in Poet's Market.

You CANNOT make money out of poetry. Not legitimately. I guarantee you the Poet Laureate of the United States (whomever she is) has a day job and makes less than a $1000 a year on her publishing rights. That is (purportedly) the BEST POET IN AMERICA who cannot make money out of poetry. HOW MUCH NEW POETRY HAVE YOU EVER BOUGHT? If anyone in Yahoo can answer more than $20 worth, then go be their friend and sell your stuff to them, because they must be a grand sucker. In fact, I'd bet half of all poetry sales on Yahoo have been Buk's book. So no, there is no legitimate way to make money with poetry. Go into advertising.

Check out a book titled "Poet's Market." It's in your library's reference section. If it's not there, ask for "Writer's Market." The book will tell you everything you'll ever need to know about how to submit your poetry and even what kind of poetry various publishers are looking for.
