I've heard it called a "left angle bracket", but that does
not refer to its mathematical use. The other one of course
would be the "right angle bracket".

I've studied math and physics, have had plenty
opportunity to see this symbol, but never have heard
of a "proper name" for it other than "angle bracket" or
"less-than sign". Hope this helps!

The symbols > and < for less that and greater than were established in the early 1600's and are merely called signs of inequality.

Hmm. I just always called it the "less than" sign. If there's another name for it, I'd be interested to find out.
