Well I'm 12 and I have wanted it my whole life too! I have done A LOT to work towards it. You should join drama club, (if your school has one. They are not very hard but it is a good experience.) Take acting classes,(this mostly depends on wear you live but I can help depending on what state you live in and how far you are willing to drive.)go to an acting camp, and get an agent and a head shot.(email me if you want more info. on what this is.) If you want we can be email buddies(lol! I know that sounds weird!)and I will email you little pieces of info. like cheating out, vocal power and posture. I can also send you tips on how to be better like tongue twisters and exercises. As I said I have been working towards it. When I say this, I mean that I have been taking classes since I was 4. Now I have 12 auditions a week and an agent. And again if you want to email me to track your progress or if you want tips, my email is devaney_amy@yahoo.com And if not I hope I see you on tv or in a movie one day!

In terms of getting started then a lot of the advice given already is very good. You might also want to look into the different "style" of acting and find out what works best for you.
DO NOT take on a particular style just because someone else thinks it is the best. It is really a matter of personal choice. You may have a natural flair for character development and improvisation. Taking on a style which involves a lot of structure and control may very well suppress the natural talents you have.
On the other hand, if you find that you work best within a structured environment and can construct believable characters through a developmental process, then a style which is very loose and flexible will be counter productive for you. Make sure you are aware of you own abilities first.
I find that my style has been very organic and not based on any particular style of itself. It is a bit of a mish-mash of several styles with few ideas of my own.
That is the beauty of acting, it is a very personal journey that you can then share with everyone.

Before you start looking for an agent or casting calls for Broadway, start small. (Or Hollywood, if you're thinking about acting on the big screen.) Learn before you leap.
Take theatre arts classes when you get to High School--if you aren't already in high school-- it's very likely that there will be some there and that is a good place to get some practice-- in class or in high school productions.
Find out about local theatre companies and about tryouts and casting for plays. Even if you don't live in a big city there is still a change there is actually a company in your area you don't know about.
If your school doesn't have theatre classes, and paying for acting classes is too costly, take them at a college. Many community colleges allow concurrent enrollment for high school and occasionally jr. high school students, and you should be able to bypass fees.
Once you've had somewhat of a repitour, then you can start on getting yourself an agent.

Get yourself a good talent agent. Get some head shots. And try going out for as many auditions as possible. Also make sure all those head shots get sent to all the major studios. But at your age the most important thing you should do is get yourself a good education. And if you want to you should try out for your school play.
