Well of course thats easier said then done. When you are working a job at minimum wage,in a job market where you have to have a college degree that will cost you about 100,000, and you still have bills to pay and children to take care. The fact most people who are poor and broke will remain that way because America's cost of living continue's to increase but the pay scale does not. Thats sad but honest truth on the situation.
Oh, and I just love how you thumbs down everyone who gives an honest answer.

for a lot of people it's not that simple, if you're born into poverty and can't afford school then you will lack the education neccessary to earn a decent living. if you have a family and you are poor then it is even harder, a lot of poor people work thenselves to death just to get by, they have bills, medical expences, rent, groceries, and most likely children to take care of, which minimum wage will not cover, High paying jobs requier education which takes time and money. Hopefully you can see that these things conflict
Also, it's a falacy that in a capitalist society such as America everyone can be rich. This just isn't true, the whole point of capitalism is competition. We all compete for the best jobs or the most customers ect. Someone wins the competition, but there are always more losers than winners.

In America, if you would rather not be dirt poor, you certainly have the choice not to. True, I have never been dirt poor, I have always lived in my mom's house in an upper-middle class neighborhood. That's part of why meeting my current boyfriend has been so expanding for me. He dropped out of school and ran away his freshmen year. He's still alive, over a decade later. He's not begging on the street, and he has enough money to appear to be a normal person, and for him to be content. He used to sell drugs and foodstamps and such, but he hasn't done that in a long while, and looking back at it, he says he feels stupid for having done it, because he has been able to find good, legal work, even without having a diploma, and it really makes him feel ashamed that he ever took the easy way out.

Most people are not heirs of a wealthy empire. Many people can't do better mainly because of circumstances.
It's hard for some people to even get employed because the position may be filled or lack of skills. Or they may not can afford college to earn a degree. It's hard nowadays.
Money is always a factor in most cases. Money is not that easy to come by these days.

What exactly do you expect them to do?
Many have no job; there aren't enough jobs to emply everyone.
Many have jobs that pay chicken feed; they work their backsides off and still can't make it.
One illness in the family and their hosed.
Would you let a loved one die? What if you don't have health care?
Again, I ask, what do you expect them to do about it?
It's not like they CHOOSE to be poor or broke.
If coming up with ideas to get out is so easy, why don't you list a bunch of them?
It's not like they have means to get out of that situation.

How about someone who has thrust themself into the military, worked hard towards a career, gone to college to further themselves within this career, racked up student loans and jumped hard into a lower paying job for experience only to be there a few years later at their previous pay scale, now divorced but stoic with shared custody.
Why do I sound bitter?
Point is, **** happens. Not always so easy to say poor people are not doing what they should to attain their desires.

In a third world country your statement would be preposterous but in the "land of opportunity" - America, it certainly is possible to pull yourself out of poverty. Alas, poverty is not just the lack of material things it is also the degradation of the mind - you actually believe you CAN'T be rich and that mindset keep you in poverty for the rest of your life.
