Go to your local motorcycle dealer, and try all the bikes you are interested in, and then compare, as you will find what feels right and comfortable and what doesn't. That's what I’m doing at the moment I’m looking at upgrading and I’m trying the seating, fell of the bike and ride of the bike and I can tell you for me PERSONALLY the Harley & I don't match; it doesn’t feel right for ME, but for you…….it may be the bike.

Harley is a lifestyle, you either are or you aren't. I aren't though I own an fxsti, I don't own any leather cloths, I have no tats and I have all my teeth. Harley's require more maintenance but they are easier to work on. I have owned lots of different bikes my favorites have been Triumphs and Harley's. They look better and get more attention from the crowd. So if you can afford to take it to the shop alot and like the looks buy a Harley, if not buy a rice grinder.

Harleys aren't slow. I'd put one against most cruisers out there. Those shaft driven Jap bikes are slow as balls. No torque at all and the shaft drive cuts down on the power even more. I'm cool with old technology as long as it works. I don't have to take my bike in for repairs because American bikes are a lot easier to work on. Drag racers use 50 year old technology. But show me a 6 second Honda.

It's as good as any bike out there. People here put them down, but usually the people that never rode one, not to mention when they're 30 they probably won't even be riders anymore. Many people use stereotypes such as vibrations or leaky fluids. The fact is today's Harley engines are rubber mounted, most are fuel injected and are good, comfortable bikes. They're expensive and not for everyone. But if they were cheap, everybody would have one and they wouldn't be special.

Yes, they are great bikes. They're comfortable, look great, sound as good as they look, are reliable, don't leak oil, don't leave you stranded on the side of the road, have great resale value and are the most fun to ride. I use to ride jap bikes but once I rode a Harley I was hooked. Don't see myself owning anything but a Harley.

I have two Harley's, and both run without any problems to date. One is a 2001 XL883C with 12,000 miles, and the other a 97 soft tail with 30,000 miles. The only thing I don't like is the stock tires. I put some Avon tires on the 97 and it was like going from standard steering to power steering.
As for the Jap bikes, they are copying the Harley's, but they just don't sound good to me. I don't like the Harley's that are fuel injected either.
Harley's seem to have more options for customization when it comes to motors.

i bought my '05 sportster brand new with 15 miles on the clock. it's now about 100 miles shy of 7000, and by the way, i live in the northeast where the season is fairly short.
in that time, all i've had to do is change the oil, and have the shop do the 1k and 5k services per warrenty. the bike is just as strong of runner now as the day i brought it home.
there's too many non-rider idiots that have absolutely no clue period about riding on y/a, the rest of them are basically squids that wont survive more than a month if that on some rice rocket. if u have the cash for a hd, get 1. u wouldnt have bought 1 if u didnt want it, and if u want a hd, no other bike will feel right.

Having owned and ridden one, as well as many other brands, I would have to say they are a decent bike for what they are made for. Statistics DO show that they have a higher frequency of repair than many other brands, and a greater overall cost of ownership. BUT, reliability and cost of ownership are not the reasons most HD riders love them. If all you care about is reliability and cost, get a Honda. People buy HDs, and a few other brands, because of their style and character - something that Hondas and many other Japanese brands tend to lack.
For the same money, I would rather own a Ducati, a BMW, or two Triumphs (one sport model and one touring model). There are so many bikes out there that offer you more for your dollar in terms of a total riding experience.

On and on it goes with this. I been hearing this for over 30yrs.
You find a bike you like? Get it, ride it, enjoy it. What do you care what others think of what you ride.
Keep the rubber side down!

Do the research on the bikes you want and pick the one you like and like to ride. That's what it really boils down to.
My personal opinion (having ridden all kinds of bikes including Harleys) is that Harleys are dated technology from the 50's. They don't perform very well, they don't handle very well and they're very expensive to purchase.
The Japanese bikes offer the same, if not better styling. Better technology, better reliability and are more cost efficient than their Harley brothers.
If you like the Harley, then buy it, it's your money.
Ride safe!
