On January 17, 1893 about 1500 members of the Honolulu Rifles, a militia composed of local citizens, occupied government buildings, disarmed the Royal Guard, and declared the Provisional Government of Hawaiʻi. During this time, at the request of American citizens living in Honolulu, about 150 sailors and Marines aboard the USS Boston came ashore to protect American lives and property. The U.S. forces fired no shots, occupied no governmental buildings, and did not participate in the takeover. The Provisional Government established by the Committee of Safety gained diplomatic recognition from the U.S. Government immediately, and from all the other foreign embassies in Hawai'i within the following two days. The Provisional Government organized itself as the Republic of Hawai'i a year later.

The Apology Resolution formally designated as United States Public Law 103-150, was adopted by both houses of the United States Congress on November 23, 1993. A joint resolution, it was signed by President of the United States Bill Clinton on the same day. It apologized for the alleged role the United States played in the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893. The resolution served as a major impetus for the Hawaiian sovereignty movement.

The resolution was passed in the Senate by a vote of 65-34. Senator Sam Nunn did not vote. In the House, it was passed by a two-thirds voice vote. It was sponsored on January 21, 1993, as S.J.Res.19 by Daniel Akaka and co-sponsored by Daniel Inouye, both senators from Hawaii.

Davianna McGregor, a professor in the University of Hawai'i Department of Ethnic Studies was credited with having written the resolution.

The country you speak of was the Nation of Hawai'i. The Queen was Liliuokalani, that crime still hurts the hearts of the Hawaiians today. Not many of the US people know what happened, but it was illegal, and you should know the history of Hawaii....why is it not taught in the public schools? Why is the history of the world taught, and not the history of the over throw of the queen taught? This, was a travesty.

I believe that this was "Hawaii", when it was still its own country & their government was a Monarchy. "Hawaii" was annexed by The US & then made a US State in 1959.
