I use to have that problem, and it is the worse thing imaginable. I took over the counter sleep aids, none worked. My wife reminded me of a time when I drove truck, and how I could eat eight or ten No-Doz and fall asleep almost immediately. I still had insomnia after I retired (which wasn't soon enough). I found that when I worried about things, it got worse. My wife ( she loves me so! ) would stay up with me on those nights. We would watch TV ( no cable back then ) together and sip hot tea. She liked those flavored tea's so we had a different one every night. It would work in about 30 minutes. It didn't work perfectly, only a few hours a night, but it got better as time went on. It wasn't until I became ill, that my Dr. said that caffeine would kill me. She prescribed a sleep medicine. Immediately night owl ,again. I gave it a real chance, and even went to a sleep clinic. It seemed to get worse. No help, so I went back to tea. Worked somewhat, but not quite as good as before. I started sipping coffee ( regular or DE-caff ) and immediately I was sleeping again. I had two things that saved my life. I say this, because now I was awake 24/7. I had the support of my wife and coffee or tea. I pray you get it under control. You will feel on top of the world.
P.S. Don't lay on the bed when you can't sleep. Your bed should be a haven from the day's activity. Get up.

I know this is an old question but I had to answer. I suffered from bipolar disorder for 5 years - so I had my share of episodes of deep depression. The whole thing started with major depression. The thing about disorders like bipolar are that they are caused by biological factors. My depression came on without warning - like I woke up one day extremely depressed and steadily got worse. There was no event that caused it. After 5 years of severe ups and downs, and a hell of a lot of work to get myself sane and stable again, my nightmare was over. I still have some episodes of depression but they are very short and not nearly as bad as they used it be

I hope I don't jinx myself but I don't get insomnia. I am usually asleep 10 minutes after my head hits the pillow. The few times in my life when I ever have had insominia, I try to think of a category of things that start with each letter of the alphabet, such as Girls Names, Boys Names, Bands, Movie Titles, Flowers, etc. I usually get stuck on one letter and while I'm trying to think of a word for that letter...BAM, I fall asleep.

I usually get up and either play with Answers for awhile or, if I have a stack of new DVDs like now, play a movie. After awhile, I'll start yawning like crazy, and go back to bed.

This does not imply that you folks on Answers are boring. Nor, for that matter, that "Birdman of Alcatraz," my antidote last night, is boring.

I suffer from insomnia almost every night. I just get on my computer and do random things until I get tired.
