I bought a piece of wood. It looks like real wood but it's dark on the outside. When I get it wet and dry it, dark stuff shows up on the cloth. My dad thinks it's varnish. Would this hurt my dragon? I haven't put it in the cage yet.

Soak it in a 1/10 bleach water solution to kill anything and bake it at 450' for 20 minutes that will kill anything. Rinse until you can no longer smell ANY bleach. If it wipes off after just water Its probably not varnish. I would recommend buying wood from a pet store or even finding pieces (not cedar or pine) and wash them and bake them like said above. Glad you asked instead of just waiting to find out. Hope you get this all figured out.

Was it from a pet store? There is an African driftwood called mopani that is sold in pet stores. It's often used for aquariums. It has a heavy amount of tannins in the surface and colours the water brown if you don't pre-soak it. It would not harm your water dragon, it is not even a problem for fish.

deep freeze or put it in the oven it will kill all bacteria on it if you have to soak it in a very mild bleach solution or fairly mild dish soap solution and make sure you get all the bleach or soap off it and its dry before letting you water dragon have it
