SOMA was a drug, used to brainwash the residents of "Brave New World" so they would not be able to think, and therefore, not have the ability to find anything wrong with anything in the world.

The SOMA is a drug that keeps the Brave New World rresidents in a pretty much constant state of bliss. They are not really happy, but they are not sad either. They sort of don't care.

Soma is the drug that was given to the people so they would believe that they lived in a perfect world. They would feel happy all the time so nothing would bother them. And that's why they invented the drug...to create a perfect society.
