my boyfriend has been a mechanic for over 20 years and he says the rav 4 is better the subaru often have oil leaks and they are known to have head gasket problems

The Rav4 sounds better but, if I were you, I would buy a 2002 Pontiac Firebird.

the Rav 4 is a better vehicle. Subaru's don't get as good gas mileage .

Whichever one has the bigger engine, or AWD. Otherwise, the better one is the one with less miles on it.
