Does $800 sound like a lot to have a compressor changed out on an AC unit, not counting compressor unit cost?

damn, it does. Is it a new compressor? Call a few junkyards to get the price of a used compressor and then ask around for someone that can install it for you. You will need freon, 2 to 3 cans which should be about 20 bucks and then the labor time should be 4 to 5 hours.
So that place wants 800 bucks for a few cans of freon and 5 hours of labor? That's crap, find some place cheaper. I have a mechanic who fixes my car, he does side jobs and it cost me $250 for him to do the whole job including the compressor. He got one at a junk yard for about 100 bucks....it works great.

Although the cost of the compressor is not included, the other things needed are expensive. The system has to be drained down of freon, the system evacuated of air, joints silver soldered and new freon installed. Labor for this is not cheap either since the person doing it owns the equipment (not cheap) and has to be licensed to do the work.
