The history of prostitution is as old as the history of man. It probably started with the idea of giving gifts to curry favor when there was no other sexual interest involved. This became more ritualized, especially during times of war, when there were camp followers to capitalize on the fact that soldiers need the basic necessities of life. Women were often taken as prizes or slaves by the winning army. They were also used to generate revenue for temples, and even the Roman Government under the reign of Caligua.

Women who were supposedly following the role of concubines and prostitutes, were also sometimes used as spies. One of the most famous was Mata Hari. I stuck on a few links I found off the top of my head. With a little searching, I'm sue you can do even better.

One of the popular urban myths is that Mary of Magdela (Mary Magdalene - real name Miriam) was a prostitute. This myth was probably started around 591 when Pope Gregory suggested that there was a link between the woman who washed Jesus's feet, and the only alleged female apostle. Most references to Mary (Miriam) have been eliminated, including most of a gospel attributed to her. There are even those who believe that she was the wife of Jesus, and that they had a daughter Sarah, who was born in France and married to royalty. This was the beginning of the so called Merovingian line, and the concept that the Royal Family was imbued with divine blood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merovingian)

Prostitution was no doubt around before biblical times. The bible refers to prostitution a number of times.Jesus even allowed a prostitue into heaven. He also said it was better to use the services of a prostitute than to commit adultry.
Prostitution has been an under rated proffession for to many years now and the men and ladies providing their services should realy be given the respect they truely deserve.People tend to discriminate more than the lord on this!!
