There isn't a whole lot to a water pump. It is basically just a pulley that turns a shaft with an impeller on the other end. Other than a worn bearing and/or a leaking seal there are not a lot that can go wrong with them. If they turn they have the ability to pump. You may have another problem if the water isn't circulating. Like a restriction in the passages, a faulty thermostat, etc. Click the following site to see the basic operation of the system along with an explanation. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cooling-system.htm/printable ...Good Luck...

Are you having problems with the car overheating or is there anti-freeze leaking around the engine. Could be a thermostat. Check the engine once its warmed up to see if there are any visible leaks in the engine compartment. How old is the car. A water pump should be replaced around 80 to 100000 miles due to normal wear and tear. Check the owners manual for more specific information.

it is much easier to tell you when it is not working

is you car running VERY HOT - like the gauge is all the way in the red or a dummy light is on

when you open the hood after it has been running, do you have your own personal cloud

if everything seems normal with a normal temp and no leakage then it should be working
