I currently use the product of a well known (ISP) to conduct the scan and they tell me my security status is excellent. My ram is high and I have plenty of hard drive space.Sometimes, I have had to abort the scan because it was taking too long to conclude.

set it to scan at a time when you will not be on the computer (like 3am) and make sure you leave you computer on the day its going to happen - that way it won't bother you...

having it take longer after you've had and used the computer for a while is perfectly normal... and a fact of life

You could try this spyware and adware software free of charge - you'll notice that once downloaded it offers a clever 'quick scan' option which focusese opn the key vulnerable areas and guarantees to be highly accurate (a FULL scan is only then intermittently necessary) -- I was very impressed with the speed - at about 5 to 7 minutes in total on a VERY 'busy' desktop and PC.

Ther is some info at this link - but the download points are aesy to spot through the review:

This does not solve the virus check issue - BUT I believe spyware and adware are more troublesome on a daily basis and if you set the virues scanner to check say once a week at a time when you are finished with the pc for the day - then it can literally do that 'overnight' -- and keep a check on the system adequately unless you frequently visit risky sites and/or regularly open risky e-mail and attachments! Otherwise a good anti-virus (like AVG's free one) should keep you pretty secure from virus anyway

An ISP that conducts the antivirus/antispyware scan from their servers will run alteast two or three hours depending on how many running processes you have in your pc, plus many programs you have installed. Your RAM, will have no impact on how long the scan takes.

Same as if you were to run say an "online scanner", Kaspersky Russia, direct from their server. Will take upto two or three hours.

You can run their scanner and will have no impact on the way your pc is scanned by your ISP. And you will see a complete scan takes two or three hours.

If you have our own antivirus or antispyware installed the scan will run faster.

I have a hugh amount of programs and a complete scan of my system with my antivirus software takes 15 mins. Quick scan half the time. http://www.filseclab.com

Try choosing what files you will scan, so only certain files are scanned, this means it will be shorter and you can schedule another scan to cover the other areas later. By splitting it up it means that it should have a greater chance of finishing part at certain times...

You can't. scans tend to take a while to complete. Maybe change the setting so it scans your PC at a time that suits you. There is nothing worse than sitting at your PC waiting for it to finish!

I have always had virus scans taking forever. They speed up if you have less files. As far as i know you just have to endure it.
