I think they would probably have been beaten then killed.
Oh yeahy:
We don't beat and kill foreigners. We give them jobs and homes. We even make it easy for illegal immigrants to become citizens. I live in America, I would know.

likely they were dealt with the same way people in your country would deal with a foreign occupier.
