Every pizza place and fast food joint within 5 miles of my home would have my application on file within 24 hours. I would have a job with one of them within a week. It's a terrible long term plan, but it would feed me until I could make better arrangements.

Your question is a bit vague, because a "bad situation" could mean almost anything. Say, for example, your situation is a legal one. You could have some difficulty securing a job if you have had scrapes with the law, because many entry-level, mostly service-related jobs involve handling money and consumer goods. People who manage such businesses are understandably reluctant to employ people with recent legal or drug problems, for fear that the temptation of handling money and consumer goods might be too great for someone who has either developed dependency problems or established a history--however brief--of theft. The obvious first choice in such a situation is the labor category often described as "less desirable" work--the work illegal aliens supposedly undertake because the average American is unwilling to take it: manual labor. There really is nothing wrong with manual labor, and it pays very well when a person of some means needs labor performed and is willing to pay someone else to do it!
As for the host of other possibilities entailed in a "bad situation," most state labor agencies maintain an employment office. There are generally well-qualified labor specialists on board at these agencies who can help you determine your work strengths and weaknesses, and they are more than happy to guide you in the direction of employers who are looking for workers just like yourself. It's a place to start, and it can help you begin to build a sound financial life, if that is your goal. It can also provide the funds (and sometimes the financial aid) necessary to pursue education or training for a field you really want to pursue.
We all live through "bad situations" at one time or another. Just know that you are at the point of making a fresh start, and there are plenty of possibilities ahead of you. Take the first steps and do not be afraid to ask for assistance in finding meaningful work. I have found it to be very true that Americans who really want to work will find work, largely because I have been one such American all my life.

Start from the bottom and basically work fast food or anything you can get.. walmart, target, whatever. you should have a job by the end of the week.... within walking distance if you dont have a car. basic needs are food, shelter, (transportation), stay alive and save the rest. then from there, gather your resume/skills and grab the classifieds during the next month. Good Luck!
