You didn't mention the part of the country you live in or what kind of snakes you have in your area.
I would check with a pest control company or, if you live near the country, go to a feed store for some suggestions.
I don't know if moth balls work or not - it may depend on the kind of snakes you have. Check the Internet also. You can find some very helpful suggestions when you check out a site that specializes in the subject you are looking up.
I know it is about impossible to keep "Cotton Mouths" aka "Water Moccasins" out of your yard. They go right over "Snake Away" as if it wasn't there. They are also very aggressive so stay away from them.
Be sure to keep all grass around or near your house cut short. They prefer taller grass,

There are no products that repel snakes. It is best to eliminate the things that snakes eat like mice. It they don't have nothing to eat they won't be around.

Snakes do not bother children unless there is nothing for them to eat. Since there is an overabundance of mice, moles, voles, chipmunks, squirrels, rats and rabbits, you should not have to worry about your kid. Are there a lot of children eaten by snakes where you live?
