Any one who tells you that Nortons is not a hugh resource hog still today they don't know what they are talking about. Plus if you ever want to remove Nortons you are left with over 375 fragments of Nortons, glued to your files, folders, registry and hidden all over your system. You will have a real nightmare trying find and remove the fragments. Nortons has a very long history of smart marketing skills, to get peope to purchase what I consider pure garbage.
Mcafee is not all that well rate.
Here is an excellent free antivirus. You can only use one or you wlll have conflict with your system.
Here is an excellent from antivirus program from AOL, Active Virus Shield powred by Kaspersky Lab of Russia. Rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. You will get auto updates every hour on the hour, plus an excellent background scanner that really works great. AOL, will only ask you for your email so they can send you a free key good for one year. After one year just request a new key.

I use Norton Internet Security on on laptop and it runs with no problems.
Norton doesn't use much memory now. It use to back in 2000-2003.
Ad Aware, Spybot and CCleaner are good to have.
Have only one antivirus program and one firewall installed on your computer.
Anti-adware/spyware are ok to have more of.
