Venus shows a full set of phases like the Moon, but it is where it is when those phases appear that was the proof that it went round the sun.

When the Moon is a crescent it appears very near the sun in the sky. That is because from our point of view it lies nearly in a line with the sun, and nearer to us, therefore the sun is lighting the back of the Moon and we see the unlit side only. Venus also shows a crescent phase when it lies near the sun in the sky, and Galileo correctly recognised this was for the same reason as we see a crescent Moon.

When the Moon is full it lies opposite the Sun in the sky. We see the full Moon because the sun is lighting it from behind us. Venus also shows a full phase. However, and this is the clincher, it does so when it is very near the Sun in the sky, and it appears much smaller in terms of diameter when full than it does in crescent phase. The ONLY way that can be so is if Venus is lying beyond the sun from our point of view. That is effective proof that Venus goes around the Sun, and its orbit is not centred on the Earth.

Because only the inferior planets of Venus and Mercury show phases. They would clearly be revolving around the sun by showing these sunlight crescents, much the same way the moon shows us different phases. All the outer planets do not show phases.
If Venus revolved around the earth in a geocentric system, no phases would be possible.

because he saw that it appeared that the planets and objects were moving from east to west.
