I'd say by the size such as:

$5 for a small lawn
$15 for a medium sized lawn
$25-$35 for a big lawn

If it was hourly and he was doing a small lawn he probably wouldn't get a lot of money

He should be paid more if you have a large lawn than a small one, but hourly and size do correspond - a larger lawn would take more time.

I have a fairly large lawn, with trees so they have to go around those - pay $40 to have it mowed, and that's a pretty good deal around here. It takes one person a solid couple hours - two people sometimes come, and get it done in a little over an hour.
