The NEAR Shoemaker (NEAR = Near Earth Asteroid Rendezevous) spacecraft spent a year orbiting the asteroid (433) Eros in 2000 and 2001. In February 2001 it descended to the surface and touched down. Signals were still received from it for about a week afterwards. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab built the spacecraft and still has a webpage devoted to it.
The Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa (formerly MUSES-C) made two attempts to touch down on the asteroid (25143) Itokawa in November 2005 to collect a sample of material for return to the Earth. The probe was damaged in the second attempt and was unable to start its return journey as scheduled. Controllers have recovered contact with the spacecraft and after some tests of its ion engine it began what will hopefully be a return to the Earth on April 25 2007. Arrival at the Earth is scheduled for 2010.
