I think when your old enough to need one, I got mine at the end of grade seven and am now in ten, you should be able to pay for one even if your parents pay for it . U should get a cell phone when you start leaving your parents more often ie going to the mall movies, to friends houses, parties, working ect ect
they come in handy, but trust me try getting a pay as you go one first then you will see how much of a financial burden it is and you will learn if u really need one thats what I did until I switched to a plan last year. If your going to get a plan ask you parents to check if they have a company plan that way since its going to be under their name anyways (must be atleast 18 for a contract) you can save some money and get a great deal I get a 40 dollar plan for 20 with Rogers though my moms work

I think it depends upon your maturity and if you (or your parents) can afford it.
As a general rule, I would say teenagers might be old enough for the responsibility of a cellphone.

I got my son one when he turned 12, he's responsible with it and only uses it for emergencies.
