Yes, it is a good thing.
As prices go up, other technologies will become more competitive - like the electric car.
Right now, the costs of those alternatives is too high, but as the price of gas goes up and the alternative technologies become more attractive investments, moe people will turn to them and morecompanies will produce them.
This will lead to more and new innovations which will bring the price of these alternatives down - think computers.
So, in the long run, yes it is good that gas prices are going up.
People who would not spend $40,000 for an electric car when gas was $1.50 a gallon will be much more likely to but the electric car if gas is $5 a gallon.
As more people buy them, more people will produce them increasing competition and innovations - look at the hybrids, more are producing them and prices for them are slowly coming down.

If everything else goes up with the gas prices, then it is neither good nor bad, but if other things DON'T go up and Gas does, then it's BAAAAD. Producers have increasing costs because of crude oil prices, which are because China and India are sucking up a lot of the world supply causing less for us. Production is not increasing enough to meet growing world demand. It's called a PINCH. We need central asian oil supplies for ourselves and others. We must control that region if we are to remain dominant nation. If not, we will be secondary and subservient to China.

Actually- It could very well be. If we're going to INSIST on driving too many oversized vehicles, too often, over too many miles- then maybe we all need to learn that there is a PRICE to be paid for this indulgence (& THAT is ever rising gas prices- until we eventually "get the message" & DO something about it). Happy motoring!

Normally yes, as prices go up, people conserve. But nobody is conserving, demand keeps going up. So that means the price of gas is not high enough (basic economics).

No, we're addicted to oil and people will pay the price, no matter what it goes up to. Nothing will come of this except fatter wallets for oil execs.

I don't see how it could be good! Different methods are still gonna cost a lot of money, so it's a lose-lose situation...at least in my eyes.
