I want to creat a LAN with a house about 40 feet away from my house. This is because then we can share the internet. But how do i do this securely without anyone else getting into the LAN? i know its possible as universities with separate campuses do it as they are all linked to the main one.

Also, my computer cannot pick up a wireless internet as i dont have the required cards.

your best option is to set it up using a wireless network.

if you string the wire (Cat 5e) between the homes you will either have to let it lay on the ground, or run it up along other wires, or but it just beneath the surface of the ground. and by the time you add the time and cost, well, i would have to believe that the wireless option is simpler, cheaper and less headaches.

who ever has the internet connection needs to have a wifi router after the cable/dsl modem.

all computers that connect to the WLAN (wireless local area net) need an adapter (PCI, USB or other device) that will interface with the WLAN. Then follow the instructions for secure setup.

additionally, keep in mind that most providers consider it a TOS violation to share the internet connection outside of the physical boundaries of the subscribers residence. you might want to read the TOS agreement very carefully, penalties are usually spelled out in that document also

do you mean a LAN connecting 35 terminals, all in different rooms? You need to run LAN cables from each terminal to the switch, but with that many i would use a few intelligent HUBs or routers to prevent bottle neck. Its not a small job, so get so professional help.

Just a quick addition to the advice from mhp_wizo_93_418........... with a decent wifi router like D-link you can encrypt the router with up to 5 exidecimal passwords - all need to be correct to allow access. Ain't nobody gonna be able to get into that uninvited!!!! - you can purchase a USB2 PCI card for about £6. from ebuyer.com :) :)
Good luck :)

using a router and cat5e, though with cat5e you will have a 200-250ft restriction before you start getting degraded signal, cat6 however does not have this restriction and you might want to bury it as in alot of places its illegal to share outside of the household (make sure its protected from moisture by some kind of barrier
