The DNA test usually gives a % of certainty. So if it's 99% accurate, then there is a 1% chance it is wrong.

There are two major things that can go wrong.

1) Not enough markers sampled. Rare but it has happened. However this is unlikely in your case as you are using it to prove biological relationships not disprove them, if the markers tested are significantly different, then it is unlikely that this is a mistake.

2) Somebody messed up samples. Again unlikely but human error is possible. The samples are only as good as the way they are labeled when they hit the lab. If someone made a mistake there, it may not have been corrected.

Ask for another test if possible, if that one backs the first one then both are accurate.

Modern DNA tests are 99.9+ percent accurate. Besides which... although there may be that one guy somewhere in the world that matches closely enough with your DNA to give a false positive... what are the chances that the child's mother also slept with him? Unless you have an identical twin, I'd be pretty confident that the test is correct. :)

If the DNA test was done by a reputable place, and a percentage was provided to you for their incidence of error (example 99.999% accurate), then I would trust the results. If you were told that you are not the father, than I would say you aren't. Sorry.

If he looks like you I surely hope he is your son because DNA is 99.9% accurate with .1% doubt. True - highly unlike to be wrong, but don't stress yourself about things you cannot control. Be prepared and remain calm. If you love him, then you have a choice to remain in his life if he is not your son. I hope he is your son! Good luck to you!

Ya, I agree with farmergirl above.

Theres a 1/14,000,000 or 0.00000007 chance of winning the lottery and yet people still win it

There's only a 0.01 chance of your test being wrong, so it's actually quite likely to be wrong in comparison.

DNA swabbing is 99% correct. Good luck with your results.

There can be false-positive results of all types of tests, but it seems highly unlikely. If you are unsure, pay to have the test redone.

It bases the likeliness that you are related by matching genomes in your dna. The more similar genomes, the more likely you are related, but there is always a degree of uncertainty.

DNA tests are pretty concrete. Just ask whoever is doing the test.
