"It sucked over there. There were times I was up for 3 or 4 days straight. But it's my job, it's my duty to be over there. As much as things sucked, seeing the dead bodies and smelling them, I can't really find a real negative experience. That comes with the territory, it's part of my job." Cpl. Brian Onieal
"I think I'm a better friend and a better son and a better citizen of the world because I went over there, because I gained that appreciation for what really matters in the world. You don't know if tomorrow will be here. You don't know how long you have. You have to be the best person you can, while you can." Sgt. Chris Arndt
"They wanted their country to be like ours. They want their country to be free. To have what they want, the freedom to exercise their own religion. To walk around their own town without worrying that someone will tell them they're doing something wrong. They wanted to have their farms and feed their wife and kids" Pfc. Michael Gillis

I have heard American soldiers being called Evil, and terrorists. These are quotes coming from the Wqashington Post. There are the few positive ones, that are not often heard enough. I have asked soldiers who were there, and know that they truly believe in the cause.

I know it's a brutal question, and see now how it is confusing. I am not at all saying that out troops are evil or the terrorists that so many liberals claim that they are. I am just wondering how others can think so.

sounds like reality...most soldiers know their jobs and only commie/socialist pig scum propagandists call our troops evil when most of them do great works risking their lives for American soldiers as well as Iraqi citizens

Of course they are not evil!
But, Blackhawk, KBR, and Dyn Corp mercenaries?
that's a little different.
Those are private armies! Historically that's very dangerous for a Democratic Republic.
The stories I've been hearing about what they are doing, those describe some very evil people. They go in, shoot people, kidnap people, torture people and leave the brave heroes you quoted above to clean up the mess and deal with a response?
And what does that say about leaders who tolerate this?
What does it say about a population that ignores this?
And isn't a private army that takes more money from he military (Blackhawk "rock star" contractors, but our soldiers don't have the Kevlar and armour they need?)
OF COURSE THE MEN QUOTED ABOVE ARE NOT EVIL!
But it's not like they can challenge a leadership that tolerates privatized evil. They have to obey orders!
Only We The People can potentially put a stop to the evil around the DOD leadership.

What are you trying to ask here? You think our troops are evil because these men and women are trying to cope with the trauma that they have been through? You're crazy! Half of my graduating class has been to Iraq at least once and some of my best friends have gone on multiple tours because they value the freedoms that we have and have taken an oath to protect our country. My good friend Josh is there on his second installment and is willing to go a thrid time just to keep a father or husband home with his family since he doesn't have that kind of commitment to worry about. I think you should be ashamed of yourself for even considering this garbage!

It would be nice to know your source...But if they are real that doesn't make these particular soldiers evil! Why would you say that? Your question doesn't make sense. The first comment seems cold, but you might think like that after being in a war, away from everything you know, and love. You need a LARGE dose of reality! If you have never served your country, you have NO right to judge what these people say!!

I think these statement represent attitudes typical of those who go to war.
In the first statement, the soldier relates (perhaps inadvertantly) the numbing effect that abject misery and suffering ultimately has on people in a warzone. He refers to his service as his "job," a rather mundane description.
The second statement is existentialist - there are no guarantees in life and one has to simply do the best they can.
The third statement is simply naive, pretending to know what Iraqis "want."
I would say all of these statements are fairly typical of anyone in the military ... under any flag.
"Evil" is a pretty loaded term. Ever studied the Milgrim Experiment? If not, check it out - the results paint a pretty grim picture of the extraordinary violence of which ordinary human beings are capable.

who ever said there are evil people?
Iraq is a country splintered into three factions and been a board game for insurgents that were not born there.
for once I'd like people to understand that the majority of Iraqis look to the coalition to protect them from thugs, criminals, and religious zealots...they are the element that
has nothing to gain by going along with any consensus.
The maddening thing is the pathetic element in this Country that is not proud of any effort that they cannot gain personally from. The Left was so scared when GWB was getting high
praise for his leadership...the scream-down..of lies and
false characterization of most Iraqis or our troops is a pathetic thing..
the lies are all voiced in the name of personal gain..from people that refuse to do anything that generally effects the supply of goods and services..except consume them.

Are you asking if the troops are evil? I don't think so. They view this as their job/duty (and it is). God bless them for believing that what they're doing over there is good. They're the ones that are over there, seeing things firsthand. It only makes it better for them to view it as right.

What are you saying? The troops evil? What is the matter with you?
Is a woman who is assulted and raped evil? Because she went thru a traumatic experience and her attitude has changed?
Check your paradigms, re-evaluate your perspective and give this some more thought.

as much as I hate many things about the united states, whenever i leave i am happy to get back, at least until i get pulled over and hassled for having long hair. These excerps seem like normal observations, from people who have been there and done it, and learned from it.
