From http://plymouthlibrary.org/bbw.htm , Matilda was:
Retained on the shelves in the Grand Rapids school libraries (1993) but not allowed to be read in the elementary classrooms. Ten parents complained about the book, calling it offensive and "appalling in its disrespect for adult figures and children"
And from http://www.crossroad.to/text/articles/msm1196.html , titled "MATILDA SPELLS M-A-G-I-C" by Berit Kjos:
Matilda's message exposes today's upside-down values. Children learn that it's okay to punish mean parents and take revenge on tyrannical principals. Vandalism is good when the victim is bad. And magic--call it witch[c]raft if you will--is fun, empowering, kind, and commendable.
