It doesn't. Legal immigration is what made our country great. ILLEGAL immigration is another matter entirely. By the fact that people are coming here illegally, demonstrates their contempt and disrespect for our laws - and should be STOPPED.

American used to be the "great melting pot" with all of the immigrants contributing to our country as they adapted to become Americans. That isn't the case anymore as these illegals seem more interested in still being Mexican or Iraqi or whatever. They don't want to become Americans, they want to take over.

The Constitution doesn't address immigration at all except to say there would be no restrictions for the first 15 years or so. But the right control immigration is derived from the plenary right of a country to issues laws for the well being and security of the country. I'm paraphrasing because I'm too lazy to do the research for you, but those are the facts.

Come come. America has always welcomed foreigners. We still have room at the Inn...

Every twenty years or so when another few millions of Mexicans have crawled across, some Republican President comes along and tries to legalize them all. "Just one more time" he says. "We'll tighten the fences this time" he says. And then another twenty years goes by and then another few million crawl across, etc.

The reason this works is that Americans have a short term memory. They have big hearts that reach out toward those who have trouble speaking English and they try to help them.
And so, our supermarkets end up with more shelves devoted to Mexican food than to canned goods.

If all this makes you a little ill, try to emigrate to Australia. They are very tough about who they will take and whom they won't. You must have a very significant job skill they they simply cannot do without. Once there, the only thing you'll have to worry about as far as overpopulation are the tree critters.

America will and always be the land of the highest bidder. Face it, you will never rate here.

People blame immigrants for the doom of this country when in fact it is us who bring the doom on ourselves. It is easy to sit back and take a side in this debate, but the complexities of it are greater than most care to acknowledge. We have to stand up for ourselves and eachother, we have to become involved (and not just by complaining on yahoo answers). Instead of crying about the problem, we all need to stand up and be apart of the solution.

A good question. I suspect it would be a good idea to limit new arrivals to those with specific skills regardless of their ethnic background or country of origin. It's time to shut the door for at least a decade if only to have some breathing space to take a serious inventory.

This country was doomed the day Lincoln won the civil war. Ever since then the federal government has assumed more and more power. This is not what the founders wanted. DECENTRALIZE OUR GOVERNMENT!

We should close immigration down for 10 years , fix the system. deport the illegals, then see where we stand before or if we want to take people again.

""Immigrants saved depopulating, graying areas of the US""

Where was this? the southwest has been steadily growing it was never a depopulating area. Well unless you count actual citizens leaving because of the problems the unchecked immigration is bringing.

Oh that's in Amendment 4-34(b), buried in the fine print at the bottom of page 1,343.
