Cichlids prefer to be in pairs.

If you have a 20 gallon or larger tank you could keep a pair of convict or fire mouth cichlids,nothing else could go in with them as they are aggressive especially when mating.Be aware that convicts will produce large amounts of fry that may be hard to even give away let alone sell.

Swordtails are good, and if you like cichlids Convicts are easy to breed. Also gouramis are good pairs.

anything but Japanese fighting fish. I put them together and the male ate the females fins off. I'm not kidding.
