So I have a freshwater aquarium and starting yesterday one of my fish decided to start randomly stacking rocks in one pile. He's the only one doing it, and he's taking the rocks from the same place and then stacking them in a single pile at the front of the tank. I've had my fish for over a year and none of them have ever done this before. I also haven't recently changed or added anything to the tank. He just started doing it for no reason what so ever....Anyone have any clue why?

This fish sounds like a cichlid. If it is, Most cichlids love to redecorate. They do this randomly. They uproot plants, knock rocks over and also pick up gravel with their mouth and spit them out somewhere else building piles. They do this for mating reasons, but most of the time just for amusement. If it isnt a cichlid, then sorry i dont know why.

Depends on the rock. Large pebbles are usually safe. More porous rock may or may not be safe. IF you've got a good test kit then fill a bucket, record values, soak rock for a few days and test again. Stacking.. be careful with that. Many people lost fish because stacks slide and in some cases this has even cracked tanks. If you want to stack rocks then get some aquarium safe silicone and glue the stack together with dabs of that.

Some fish just like "redecorating". Others turn rocks over when they're looking for food and they all just seem to be pushed into one area of the tank.

A more likely explanation (depending on the species of this fish) is that it's building a redd - a depression in the gravel for spawning.

I don't know what kind of fish it is,but if he has a mate in the tank he might be getting a spot ready for eggs or babies.

If the fish is an African Cichlid it's probably digging a spawning pit. Many of the Mbuna do this.

Maybe getting ready to have babies. My sisters fish had babies, and the mom made them stay in 1 spot, if they strayed away, she would catch them in her mouth, and take them back to where they were supposed to be, and spit them out. Maybe your fish is making a spot for her babies.

i think its a mating process. the female will lay the egges in the pile of rocks and he'll fertilise them so i think he's just doing this and hoping he gets laid lol
